[Closed] The Jungle Bunch

by Kyla on July 9, 2012 · 110 comments

The weather has been pretty miserable lately and we’ve spent a lot of time stuck indoors which invariably means we’ve spent at least some of that time watching movies. I find movies are a godsend during crazy cooped up days, we do crafts and play but movies give mummy time to at least attempt to tidy the house and get dinner on without interruption.

A few weeks ago I was asked to review the new Sony Universal DVD ‘The Jungle Bunch’ which features John Lithgow as a penguin that thinks he’s a tiger. After watching the shorts I waited eagerly for the DVD to arrive, Dexter very much likes penguins at the moment so I knew he’d want to watch them and it looked great, plus I loved the idea of a penguin who thinks he’s a tiger.

Maurice (the penguin voiced by Lithgow) fell off the ice as an egg and was adopted by a tiger which has made him a mighty confused bird – he totally thinks he is a tiger. He lives in the jungle with his adopted Tiger Fish son and his happy friends each with their own idiosyncrasies. When two penguins from Maurice’s Walrus-oppressed native Antarctic village come searching for help to end the reign of walrus terror, Maurice and his group of friends embark on an adventure to help.

I enjoyed The Jungle Bunch, although I have to admit I was left with the feeling that this was a sequel, perhaps that was because I thought the movie was about Maurice growing up as an adopted tiger and I was really looking forward to it so when it was about his adventure back to the ice it took a while for me to adjust. Really though, that’s such a small complaint; Dexter enjoyed the movie and managed to sit through most of it which at two and a half is about as much I can hope for. He loved the penguin but his favourite characters were the frogs, he thought they were absolutely hysterical, especially when they helped fight the walruses.

The Jungle Bunch runs for under 60 minutes which is just perfect for littlies, it’s visually entertaining, Dexter often laughed at the actions of the characters, and he just fell in love with the characters, including the “silly billy penguin”. Silly billy because, of course, penguins don’t rarwww. Released on 21st June, The Jungle Bunch is a great movie for keeping your little ones entertained and is available now at stores Australia-wide RRP $19.95.

Thanks to the team at Sony Universal I have a kids entertainment prize pack to give away. Containing The Jungle Bunch, Despicable Me, Zhu Zhu Pets and Nim’s Island this prize pack will keep your littlies happy for hours and hours.

To enter simply comment here to tell me your top tip for keeping kids entertained in bad weather.

I tuck away things for craft and games all year round. When bad weather hits, I pull them out of their hiding places so there is something new and fresh to do! Lots of variety is the key!

Guess that Taste! I loved this game as a child and it will be a game passed down generations. It involves blindfolding one or more player and popping some food product on a spoon for players to taste – they must then try and guess what it is! I gave my brother bird seed once and he couldn’t guess it, but said it tasted nice! I laughed and laughed, when the stitches in my stomach were gone I told him it was bird seed! He was as mad as anything – I still think it’s funny and he is still alive so it didn’t do him any harm!!!

I take my kids to an indoor playground, like Lollipops or Megamania. They love it and spend hours playing, then sleep very well that night!

There are so many activities that come to mind but our fav at the moment with my 2.5 year old is as simple as tickling on the bed & hiding under the blankets. If daddy is involved it becomes a pillow fight too!

We are big dorky arts&crafts types. Bad weather doesn’t get us down at all. I have to give-up the entire kitchen table, but no one minds that.

Nothing beats a cardboard box – it can become a racing car, a space ship, a pirate ship, castle, fairy kingdom etc etc. Hours of fun turning it into the kid’s latest fantasy and then hours more playing in it!

Boxes and blankets make the best tents, castles and hideouts! You can eat under the tents, read, play cards, games, colour and/or paint! We do all this when it’s raining outside, this keeps my girl active both physically and mentally when she can’t do this outside!

54 sara bleys July 16, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I think the best thing you can do is plan ahead, most of the time we know its going to be bad weather so make a timetable with the kids on what you will be doing, let the kids choose what they are going to do and then set a time limit on each activity so they are not getting bored……..My boys are 4 and 2 and some activities we include are painting, reading, dancing, cooking :D
