[Closed] Win – Philips Avent Combined Steamer & Blender

by Kyla on October 3, 2012 · 390 comments

As new parents you’re busy enough and the first things to go are the things that take up too much time. I come across so many awesome products as part of writing this blog but the very best of them are always products that make my life easier in some way. I love products that are designed with the end user in mind, ones that are simply better ways of doing things you already do, making the time consuming processes undertaken in every day life so much easier to deal with.

I was recently sent the Philips AVENT Combined Steamer and Blender to review; it’s one of those products that I really wish I’d thought to buy when Dexter was young. I made a lot of food for him at home; I’d chop veggies, steam them on the hob and then mash it all up in a bowl before transferring it to cubes and freezing. It was a messy process that was really only made easier by the fact that hubby did all the dishes.

Dexter’s a bit old for purees now but I do like to keep a couple of mixed fruit/veggie purees in the freezer to add to food that might not be that healthy otherwise – tinned spaghetti gets a cube of veggie puree mixed through it before serving and even pancakes get a cube of hidden fruit, every little helps, right?

The Combined Steamer and Blender would have made my life so much easier when he was younger – it’s an absolute dream to use, you simply steam, flip, blend and serve. It’s that easy – you pop in whatever vegies, fruit, meat, fish or pulses you want to feed your baby into the combined steamer and blender and steam it up, when it’s done you don’t need to transfer it to another bowl you just flip the jar over and blend, just one thing to wash, how easy is that?

I’ve got a freezer full of purees from the last time I did a big batch but the weather is warming up so I decided to make up some berry (with hidden greens) ice blocks for Dexter. I chucked in some berries, bananas and spinach, steamed it up, blended it and added a little apple juice, honey and lemon juice before pouring into ice block moulds. They were awesome, healthy and chock full of goodness without any additives or preservatives, yum.

I really can’t get over how easy the Philips AVENT Combined Steamer and Blender is to use and it’s also super compact which is so important with the clutter we tend to have on our kitchen benches these days. Plus, it’s small enough for you to take away with you on holidays, allowing you to make baby’s food wherever you are.

It doesn’t look like we’ll be lucky enough to have another child but this has definitely gone onto my must-buy list of new mama gifts and thanks to the fantastic team at Philips I have a Combined Steamer and Blender, valued at $239.95 to give away. For your chance to win simply comment here to let me know your top tips for getting kids to try new food.

This giveaway ended on 6th November 2012.

I just put a small amount on their plate, once they have tried it they can eat the rest of their dinner, I don’t mind if they don’t like it, as long as they have given it a go.

When introducing new food to kids, before offering them show them that you are eating it. Be role model and they will copy you

When my nearly 2 year old gets fussy, I bring some of her Little People toys to her table and she feeds them first and then it’s “her turn” to take a bite. She shows them “how to eat like a big girl”. And we make sure they are “paying attention and watching”! The role playing works a treat :)

If they show interest in something on your plate, give them some.
Disguise it eg chop up new vegetables really small or mash them in with foods they like and then slowly mak the pieces bigger as they get used to the taste.

I put new foods in my daughter’s favourite little snack jar. She loves to pop it open and put her hand in it. She then scoops whathever is inside and gives it a try! Fun!

My top tip is to talk the food up before it goes on the plate- tell them that it’s yummy and good for them. Then when serving don’t make a big deal about it- they will eat it or not, and food should never become a battle. The more you try to get a child to eat something, the more they will dig their heels in and refuse. If it’s not eaten I simply take away the plate without a fuss- and guaranteed it will be on their plate the next time…and the next…and the next…and the vast majority of the time a food refused to start with is eaten even if it takes 20 refusals first! :)

Honestly, bribery! My 5 year old daughter gags at the sight of veggies, so a promised trip to the park in exchange for at least a bite does wonders! My 2 year old loves his veggies and will eat anything green before the rest and my baby is a piggy and eats anything and everything I make for her!

As we all eat with our eyes, I like to set up a “finger-food buffet” and have the kids pick the items they’d like eat. This also makes it fun!
I start with any small container or plate with compartments and customize the meal by filling the sections with bite-size portions of colourful, nutritious foods. Some great food ideas include: cubed cheese, whole grain cereals, grapes, sugar snap peas, baby carrots, and cherry tomatoes. Once you’ve filled the compartments, let them pick their items, allowing them to be hands on with their meal.

I also set up little bowls that I fill with dipping sauces and put them in the middle of the table for them to share. Whatever we are having, I always give them dipping sauces, such as tomato sauce, mustard or honey. As long as they can dip their food into one of these, they will eat anything.

I’m also about to start growing a vegetable garden. My theory is that if they see them growing and have a hand in nurturing their growth they might actually eat them. I’m thinking broccoli, beets, spinach, bell peppers, tomato and a selection of herbs!

My tips for introducing new food:
* Be a role model first – let your children see you trying and enjoying the food.
* Introduce a small amount of the new food along side some thing they already like to eat.
* Be creative with how you display new foods – I love the ideas pinterest has to make food into animals, people or any thing really, it is amazing!
* Talking about the new food helps – colour, taste and texture.
* Finally not to stress during meal times, I have noticed it has taken a few times for my children to become happy to try a new food just persist and stay positive!

Grated veggies in things like spaghetti bowl. It’s a great way to get them to unknowingly eat a few extra veggies all whilst enjoying their favorite meal. And if that doesn’t work, I invite my older nephew /niece around to eat and the little kids want to be just like the big ones and gobble up whatever is served.

If at first you dont succeed, try and try again. Sometimes it will take up to a dozen attempts before they will try it. Also try it different ways, steam, roast, stir fry, mash, put it in an omelette… etc.

I take my littlies to the fresh food section of the supermarket and ask them to pick three different coloured vegetables each, then when we get home they help me search through the recipe books to find a creative way of cooking them! They love getting involved and that they have chosen the ‘special vegetables’ themselves and I’ve found they are much more likely to eat the new food because they’ve helped with the decision making. Sometimes they choose veggies that I myself have never tried, or even heard of! :)

I have a fussy four year old so I explain to him the benefits of eating vegetables -milk and cheese for strong bones and teeth for playing soccer, carrots to help him see the ball, meat to keep him playing longer and vegetables to help him think about how he is going to kick his next goal. Amazingly it works.

I disguise new food such as a vegetable by grating it into mince and making burgers, lasagne etc so my kids don’t know what they are eating. Step 2 involves gradually introducing small portions into my cooking so they gradually get used of the taste!
